Locksley Shay Gallery has long been a distinguished name in the art world, known for its dedication to showcasing fine art from established and emerging artists. Chicago-born Locksley moved to Minneapolis in 1954 and met Shea, a professor in Japanese language and literature at the University of Minnesota.

The duo first found success selling artwork—primarily prints by well-known modern and contemporary artists—while running the Red Carpet Beauty Salon and Beauty College.

As business picked up, they opened the Locksley Shay Gallery in their mansion in the distinguished Kenwood neighborhood of Minneapolis. The gallery quickly became a Midwestern outpost for some of the most well-known artists of the 20th century, mounting exhibitions by leading contemporary artists.

The gallery became renowned for its legendary opening night parties, where Twin City society mingled with top contemporary artists. On one fabled night in 1967, guests reveled in live music as Christo wrapped models in cellophane.

‍Locksley Shay Gallery played a crucial role in shaping the Minneapolis and broader Minnesota art landscape. As one of the most respected institutions in the region, it provided a platform for both local and international artists to gain exposure.

The gallery was instrumental in fostering a thriving arts community, bridging contemporary and traditional artistic movements while elevating Minnesota’s reputation as a hub for fine art. Locksley and Shea maintained strong ties to the Minneapolis art scene even after relocating, loaning several significant pieces from their collection to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 2006.
